About Us

The Straits Area Grape Growers Association (SAGGA) is a non-profit agricultural organization dedicated to promoting the awareness and expanded growth of high quality cold tolerant and cold climate grapes throughout the Northern Lower Peninsula and Upper Peninsula of Michigan, including The Tip of the Mitt American Viticultural Area (AVA).

THE GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF SAGGA ARE:

To provide a networking, benchmarking and education platform for cold climate viticulture that commercial vineyard owners and managers, personal use grape growers, and those interested in becoming growers can participate in and draw from.
To promote good stewardship of the land and encourage and educate members on the use of sustainable agricultural practices.
To emphasize the unique climate, topography, and soils that differentiate the area from other grape-growing regions of Michigan.
To promote Northern Michigan as a source of premier cold tolerant and cold climate wine grapes and table grapes for commercial and personal use.
To promote to the wine, cider, and distilled spirits industries the value-added benefits of cold tolerant and cold climate wine grapes grown in Northern Michigan.
To promote the branding of The Tip of the Mitt AVA as a designated source for premium cold hardy and cold tolerant grapes for use in the production of unique high value wines.
To create a dynamic marketplace to match up the commerce needs of grape growers with commercial and personal use wine, cider, and distilled spirits makers.
To help create and promote volunteerism and employment opportunities in the viticulture industry.
To network SAGGA with other viticulture and craft beverage groups, related government agencies, educational institutions, development organizations, and private industry to address these stated objectives.
To promote a healthy social and political environment conducive to grape growing for benefits of the membership.
